ISLA has joined forces with Lifeguard’s without Borders to conduct an ISLA Basic Open Water/Surf Lifeguard training course on October 4 -6, 2013 in Holland, Michigan (on the eastern seaboard of Lake Michigan).
The course will be 30 intensive hours of training that includes lectures and examinations in the classrooms, demanding physical activities and hands-on practical training. All prospective students must be able to swim at least 600 continuous yards, be at least 16 years of age, and possess a current CPR/First Aid certificate from the Red Cross or any other governing agency. Passing course participants will receive a basic open water ISLA certificate.
This course is the second partnership with ISLA and Lifeguard’s without Borders, as the first took place in Europe earlier this Summer and proved to be a successful collaboration. This course marks the beginning of a larger initiative for ISLA and Lifeguards without Borders to assist and strengthen lifeguard operations in the Great Lakes area. The Great Lakes currently have some of the highest drowning rates in the United States.
Founded in 2007 by retired firefighter and NDPA Lifesaver of Year 2012’s Bob Pratt, the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project has worked tirelessly to promote lifesaving in the regions and raise awareness about lifeguarding in the Great Lakes region. This course will continue to strengthen the objectives of the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project and bring further training to the region’s lifeguards.
