This week our ISLA Instructors went to work with the City of Huntington Beach Lifeguards to run a hands-on field trip for over 60 Kindergartners from Orange County. The day was considered an enormous success as the students got to engage, participate and learn the many facets of lifesaving… and have a ton of fun along the way!

The activities were split into 5 work-stations that were managed with both ISLA and Huntington Beach lifeguards. The 60 students were split into much smaller teams of 12 and accompanied by several parents and their teachers. Every 30 minutes the students would shift workshops, and each workshop was specifically set up to teach one aspect of lifesaving and beach-safety. The workshops involved visiting a lifeguard tower, exploring the equipment within a lifeguard truck, and doing a relay that involved a lesson on how to surf. Once that was completed the students enjoyed lunch a video about ocean safety, while interacting and getting to hang out with their new friends.. the lifeguards!

The students had a unique and very hands-on experience, but most importantly had a very memorable lesson in beach safety and fun. If you represent or are a part of a local Southern California elementary school interested in learning more, contact ISLA at info@islasurf.org.
